Can a Parent Make the First Inquiry?

Yes — and in many Sri Lankan families, that is exactly how it begins. What matters is that the son or daughter knows about it and agrees.

In Sri Lanka, marriage is rarely a decision made alone. Parents, siblings and elders are part of the process, and it is very common for a mother, a father or a close relative to make the first call to us. This article explains how that works.

Yes, a parent can start the conversation

You are welcome to call us, message us on WhatsApp or visit our office on behalf of your son or daughter. Many parents want to understand the process before they discuss it at home, and we are glad to explain everything first.

In that first conversation, we can explain:

  • How the proposal process works from start to finish
  • What information is recorded at registration, and how it is used
  • How personal details and photographs are protected
  • What the packages are, and how charges are confirmed
  • What a realistic timeline looks like

There is no obligation to register after asking questions.

The candidate must be part of the decision

We ask that the person who will be registered knows about the registration and agrees to it. There are two reasons for this. First, it is their life and their marriage, and their consent matters. Second, the search only works well when the person themselves is ready. A proposal the candidate is not interested in is not fair to them, or to the other family.

A parent can begin the inquiry. The candidate's own agreement is what completes it.

When parents and their son or daughter want different things

It is natural for parents and their son or daughter to see some things differently — perhaps about location, profession or horoscope matching. Through our family consultation, we can sit down with you together, listen to both views and help find common ground before proposals begin.

How families go about it

In some families, a parent calls first and later visits the office with their son or daughter to complete the registration together. In others, the candidate handles the registration while the parents stay involved as proposals are considered. Both are fine; we follow what suits your family.
